PA's "do not call list"
8/31/07
Attorney General Tom Corbett urged residents to review their
registration with the PA "Do Not Call" list, and re-register any numbers
that are about to expire. Corbett explained that registration on the Do
Not Call list is only valid for five years from the date of initial
registration. Consumers who first signed-up for the program in 2002 must
re-register by Sept. 15, 2007, or their number will be removed from the
list.
The "Do Not Call" law was created to reduce the number of unsolicited
and unwanted telemarketing calls. Nearly 4-million PA residents are
currently registered on the Do Not Call list.
Consumers who were among the first two million
Pennsylvanians to register in the summer and early fall of 2002 may re-register online using the
Attorney General's website, by calling the toll-free hotline at
1-888-777-3406, or by mailing their name, mailing address, telephone
number and signature to the Attorney General's Office. "It is
important to remember that although your number may be registered with
the Do Not Call list there are exceptions under the law that allow
telemarketers to call your home," Corbett said. These exceptions include
calls from:
-- Telemarketers who have had an established business relationship with
you within 12 months preceding the call.
-- Tax-exempt charitable organizations, veterans' organizations
chartered by the U.S. Congress and calls made on behalf of a political
candidate or political party.
-- Telemarketers calling at the express request of the residential
telephone customer.
Over 500,000 people have registered for PA's "do not call list", in
just three days (Aug 6-8, 2002).
Register at www.nocallsplease.com or at 1-888-777-3406.
Register by 9/15 and your name will be effective 11/01. After 9/15 the
list will be updated quarterly.
Telemarketing calls after the effectivity of your name on the list can
result in fines of $1000, or $3000 if the recipient is 60 of older.
Certain calls can still be made legally. See the
article in the 8/11 Daily Local News for details.
