Weather stripping gasket repair
for Silverline model 3550 windows Most, but not all, windows at
FHF are made by Silverline. Their phone number is 1-800-234-4228 or
1-732-937-5800. Arthur is the Silverline technical person that covers
the Philadelphia area. He knows McKee, and Fox Hill Farm. By asking a
few questions, Arthur can determine the model of window you have in your
house. Windows on most FHF houses (but not the early or late-built
houses) are Silverline model 3550.
Numerous residents have noticed
that the weather stripping gasket, on the bottom of each (lower) window,
is breaking into pieces and is coming off the window. The gasket
material is covered by a warranty, and will be sent to you for free.
Labor is not covered. If a resident is not able to install new gaskets,
Silverline will install them at $10 per window.
Although it may be possible for
one (strong) person to replace the gasket, it is very helpful to have
two people when replacing the gasket. This is the procedure for
replacing the gasket.
- Raise the window a
few inches.
- Tilt the window so
it is approximately level with the floor.
- Raise either the
left or right side of the window until one of the metal pieces at
the bottom of the window comes out of its plastic piece in the
window frame channel.
- Slide the window
sideways so the other metal piece at the bottom of the window, on
the other side of the window, comes out of its plastic piece in the
window frame channel.
- Carefully move the
window out of the window frame, to avoid scratching the paint on the
walls.
- Put the window
vertically on the floor, with one side of the window resting on the
floor. It is very helpful to have a plastic sheet or large bag on
the floor beneath the window because dead insects, dirt, and pieces
of gasket will be falling onto the floor.
- Pull the old
gasket out of a channel/groove in the bottom of the window.
- Push the new
gasket into the channel until the end of the gasket lines up with
the side of the window resting on the floor. The new gasket is
provided in long rolls, so it will need to be cut to the width of
your window.
- Use a pencil to
mark the gasket at the top side of the window.
- Pull the gasket
out of the channel a couple of inches and cut the gasket at the
pencil mark, with sharp scissors.
- Push the gasket
back into the channel, so that both ends of the gasket are even with
the sides of the window.
- Pick the window
up, and position it at a slant, in the window frame. Make sure that
the ledge or handle, at the bottom of the window, is facing the
floor.
- Move the window so
the metal piece at the bottom of the window can be inserted into the
higher plastic piece in the window frame channel. Occasionally the
plastic piece may rotate in its holder. A large screwdriver is
needed to rotate the plastic piece so the slot is vertical.
- Move the window
again so the other metal piece at the bottom of the window can be
inserted into the lower plastic piece in the window frame channel.
You may need to nudge the higher side of the window up or down, to
position the window correctly. It is very helpful to have the other
person move the window up or down while you are holding the window.
Occasionally a rubber mallet is needed to lightly bump the window,
to get it to move up or down, as needed. Again, occasionally the
plastic piece may rotate in its holder. A large screwdriver is
needed to rotate the plastic piece so the slot is vertical. The
second person can rotate the plastic piece while you are holding the
window.
- When both metal
pieces at the bottom of the window are in their respective plastic
pieces in the window frame channel, the window can then be moved
from a slanted position to a position that is level with the floor.
- Tilt the window to
the vertical position, and verify that the latches have snapped into
the left and right channels in the window frame.
- Lower the window
until it is closed. The new gasket will take more force to compress
than the old gasket, so you may need to pull down on the window with
your body weight, to be able to lock the window.
- Congratulations!
You have completed the installation of new gasket material on this
window. You now have one less window to do. :-)
